Picking

Ideally we require all your apples to be gathered in one spot ready to be processed, the cleaner they are the better.

Washing Apple

We Scrub

We wash the apples thoroughly to remove any dirt, insects and harmful bacteria that could harm and affect the cider or juice.

We Smash

We Smash

To enable us to get that lovely juice from your apples, we then Mill (grind) the apples. You will end up with a juicy mush of apples known as “Pomace”.

We Squeeze

We Squeeze

Now we use our very efficient press to get that lovely apple juice from the Pomace. The juice will now begin to pour until we cannot get any more.

What do I need to do to prepare my apples for pressing?
Ideally, we would need access to an electricity supply and mains water to wash your fruit on a preferably off road site, such as a driveway. Apples need to have been picked and gathered in one spot; the cleaner they are the better. The processing of your apples is a food process and hands should be washed prior to and after handling fruit and visits to the bathroom. From the tree to the glass, cleanliness is essential. Apples should ideally be picked from the tree.  However, we never turn a good apple down and apples that have been picked from the ground (windfalls) need to be carefully checked for bad bruising, insect infestation or mold, if they have been on the ground for more than a day or two they are highly likely to have an infestation. Common sense should prevail and if you wouldn’t but it in your mouth to eat, it should be discarded.  Similarly, apples that have been picked where livestock have been grazing or are larger than 8cm (big bruisers) must not be used to reduce the risk of patulin toxin. Please note.  Fresh apple juice should not be consumed prior to pasteurisation.  The juice could potentially contain harmful microbes and we value your health and future custom!!
What if I only have a small quantity of apples?
The minimum amount of apples we could practically press is about 250 kilos/550lbs in weight, which would typically could give you approximately 120 litres of juice. Why not get together with your neighbours and club your apples together.  Not only could you split the costs but the different varieties of apples make for great juice. If you are really struggling for apples we can help out and provide enough apples for you to use.
What types of apple do I need to make juice?

A tasty Cider or juice can be made from almost any apples. In the West Country we are fortunate to have a wide variety of specific Cider apples which can make single variety brews. Without getting to technical, Cider in its most basic form can be made from  a quantity mixture of a quarter of bitter (cookers) and three quarters desert apples (eaters). Crab apples are ideal for adding extra taste by virtue of their high Tannin content.

We can always help out by blending your brew with others to produce a more interesting taste!

Good apple juice is made from your best dessert apples.

How do I know my apples are ripe?
A good indication is that most apples will come away from the branch with a little twisting action when ready. If you cut through a ripe apple it will also have brown coloured pips and not white.  One of best ways to harvest your crop is to give the tree a good shake and it will rain apples.
I want to keep my own juice for Cider making, but I am unsure about how to do it?
It’s easy and we can give you practical on going advice about what you need to do and when.
I want to make Cider but do not have any apples?
Unfortunately we can not  provide apples.  What about asking around your neighbors, or wider community and see if you can get together and make your own special blend of Cider .
If you are processing my Cider, how do I know when it is ready?
We will email you or send a text, or phone, or write a letter notifying you that it is ready.
How long will my Cider take to be ready?
Like all good things, the longer they are left to do their own thing the better. It is very much the same with Cider. Drinkable Cider could be ready within 3 months but we would generally recommend 6 months.
I have taken the partnership option, why do I only get half my juice back?
We offer really good value for money and in order to cover our running costs we need to be able to try and market surplus juice that comes from the partnership option, the other half of your juice helps in this process.
I have taken the partnership option, can I resell my Cider?
Any Cider provided to you under the partnership option will be marked not for resale, if you want to sell it then please speak with us.
Can I get involved on the day with the juicing process?
Absolutely, we encourage involvement and find that people really enjoy the whole event.
What age do I need to be in order for you to return my Cider back to me?
We will only process your juice to Cider if you are 18 or over.  Do not be offended if we ask for Identification.
Do you offer a pruning service?
Yes, we are able to carry out restorative pruning on your trees.  We have all the necessary equipment to comply with health and safety guidance.  We are also specialist in long term orchard restoration management for old orchards.
